Preserve Park Steward Volunteer

Become a Preserve Park Steward and help make a difference!

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is seeking volunteers who can help monitor, protect, and maintain over 35,000 acres of preserve lands. With a limited number of Park Rangers on hand to manage these public lands, becoming a Park Steward is a way to "give back" to these beautiful areas that so many enjoy. Park Stewards are a valuable part of our conservation team.

There are many ways in which you can become a member of the Park Steward team. From being a trail monitor, to maintaining trailhead gates; from assisting with litter pick up, to providing educational information to park users. Park Stewards can even perform their duties while using their own personal equipment such as a bicycle or horse! They also receive identification gear, field training, and continuous support from park staff. We invite YOU to share in our commitment to caring for YOUR Desert Parks & Mountain Preserves.

- Participants must submit a Park Steward Application (Individual Application or Group/Family Application).
- Participants must be at least 16 years of age to qualify for the Individual Park Steward category.
- Participants must attend an Orientation/Field Training session led by City of Phoenix Park Rangers.
- Participants must be willing to volunteer a total of 60 hours per year.
- Participants should be in sound physical health.
- Individual participants must possess a valid I.D. Card or Drivers License.
- Certain volunteer positions may require a background check and/or fingerprinting.

Give back to the mountain and work with the Rangers on the South Mountain Trail Crew. Duties include tread maintenance, rock work, social trail closures, and installing/updating signage and trail posts. Meet at the Ranger Office inside the park, 10919 S Central Ave Phoenix, AZ 85042. Bring water, appropriate clothing, and work gloves if you have them. Be prepared to hike up to two miles to and from work sites. Please bring a face covering for carpooling and be prepared to maintain social distancing throughout the project.

MTB Patrol Training is designed for Phoenix Park Stewards with intermediate mountain biking skills who are familiar with riding the Phoenix Mountain Park/Preserve trails. Participants need to be able to perform basic bike maintenance on the trail (changing a flat tire).
